'Drive': Lock, Load and Rock N Roll

In his debut in Hollywood, director Nicolas Winding Refn's life invites us to trace the unnamed man, the driver (Ryan Gosling). His face was calm, talk as needed, like chewing on a toothpick and wore a jacket with a picture of a scorpion on the back. In the daytime the driver to work in a garage or a stuntman for Hollywood movies.

At night he helped the criminals who need his services, although he himself is not a criminal. He was not carrying a weapon like a gun or something. These criminals need it because he's very good at, yes, driving.

The driver's life changed completely when he met with his neighbor, Irene (Carey Mulligan). The story of this romance will not go smoothly as we all think. Irene turned out to have a husband who will soon be out of jail. He is the Standard (Oscar Isaac) is quite defensive in order to maintain its territorial area.

The problem starts to become rather complicated when the driver found slumped on the floor with Standard battered face. During his stay in the cell Standard owe it to the wrong person and now he must account for his debt immediately. Or, something bad will happen befall his family. That's when the driver decides to intervene.

Drive from the first frame, we already knew this movie would be the most powerful cinematic adventure this year. All that thanks to the cold hands Refn who adapted the script from Hossen Amini extraordinary (which was adapted from the book James Sallis). It all makes the film that had been planned as a blockbuster-style 'Fast and Furious' with Hugh Jackman as the star becomes an Arthouse, which then deliver the director won honors at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Refn proven talent when we see how Ryan Gosling transformed into a deadly character. Gosling did look harmless and quiet. Give him a hammer and a car, he would make everyone, including Carey Mulligan dropped. His eyes were filled with various things that are not delivered through the mouth, makes it look more impressive.

Carey Mulligan is a sensational figure. Her beauty is simple and that's what makes us understand why the driver can be crazy about him. While Bryan Cranston from the series 'Breaking Bad' provide spice of humor in his role as mentor the driver. Christina Hendricks (one of the main character in the AMC TV series, 'Mad Men') is even only appeared less than ten minutes to give an unforgettable performance as Blanche.

But the real fire is located on Albert Brooks. He was installed as a crime boss with a soft tone. Wait until he's playing with a knife or fork possible. That's when Brooks is ready to be called the jurors Oscar next year.

The greatness of 'Drive' does not stop acting the star but also how this film as a parade speeding film history, especially in the era of 70's and 80's. Film titles fonts in pink, reminiscent of the movie 'Risky Business'. Note the half-hour early films involving intimate relationship between Gosling and Mulligan reminiscent of John Hughes movies. And, of violence in this film is a bit reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino.

All these things will not work without editing Matthew Newman is able to translate kemauaun Refn to make the 'Drive' looks like old school movie. Music composed by Cliff Martinez is very magnetic. More magnetic than he showed in 'Contagion' some time ago. And, Newton Thomas Sigel movement of the camera managed to record not only the city of LA as a mesmerizing background but also as the most perfect place as the home of the driver.

If you wish 'Drive' will be a lighter film like 'Fast and Furious', forget it. 'Drive' is an ultra-genre film. Depending on what angle you view it. This is a beautiful dream that you hope will never end. 'Drive' is a grenade that will explode at any time and do not be surprised if I dare say out loud that this is the best film this year.
